I had the opportunity to attend the JustServe Conference on May 14 and hear from organizations and community leaders focused on the importance of service, collaboration, and building stronger communities through action.
One of the biggest takeaways was the reminder that meaningful change happens when people come together, step up, and find ways to support one another beyond just talking about problems.

Councilmember Matt Weyer and I had the opportunity to welcome 2nd graders from Waikele Elementary School to the Hale and show them around City Hall.
It was great seeing how curious and engaged they were, asking thoughtful questions about topics like e-bikes, homelessness, and recycling. Being able to share how the City Council works and how we serve the people of Honolulu was a meaningful reminder of how important it is to help young people understand their role in the community. Hopefully, experiences like this inspire future leaders and maybe even the next generation of public servants right here in our city.

It was great seeing how curious and engaged they were, asking thoughtful questions about topics like e-bikes, homelessness, and recycling. Being able to share how the City Council works and how we serve the people of Honolulu was a meaningful reminder of how important it is to help young people understand their role in the community. Hopefully, experiences like this inspire future leaders and maybe even the next generation of public servants right here in our city.
I had the opportunity to attend Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary School’s Career Fair, and honestly, these are some of my favorite events as a councilmember.
Being able to talk with students, share my journey, and hopefully inspire the next generation is always meaningful. I had the chance to speak about my role as a councilmember, my background as an entertainer and comedian, and the importance of staying involved in your community and believing in your own path.
The 3rd and 4th graders were incredibly engaged and shared their own dreams for the future, from becoming YouTubers, veterinarians, artists, singers, and engineers, to even comedians.
It reminded me that sometimes all it takes is one person to encourage a young person to believe in themselves. I still remember the teachers who made that difference for me growing up, and if we can do that for even one student, it matters.
Moments like these are why investing in our youth is so important. Their future starts with the support and encouragement we give them today.
