The City and County of Honolulu is making it easier to recognize the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Hawaiʻi's Purple Heart recipients with the introduction of a new Purple Heart specialty license plate.
The specialty plate provides eligible Purple Heart recipients with a meaningful way to display their distinguished military service while helping raise awareness of the sacrifices made by those wounded or killed in combat.
The new plate builds upon Honolulu's designation as a Purple Heart City, established through legislation introduced by Councilmember Augie Tulba. Along with the City's Purple Heart signs displayed near military installations and veterans' facilities, the specialty plate serves as another visible reminder of the community's enduring gratitude for those who have sacrificed in defense of our nation.
"Every Purple Heart represents a story of extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and love of country," Councilmember Tulba said.
"These specialty license plates provide another meaningful way to honor the brave men and women who were wounded or made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. As a proud Purple Heart City, Honolulu remains committed to ensuring their service is remembered and their legacy lives on for generations to come."
Councilmember Tulba also thanked Mayor Rick Blangiardi and the City and County of Honolulu Department of Customer Services for helping bring the specialty license plates to fruition.
"This license plate is more than a vehicle registration—it is a symbol of a grateful community," Tulba said. "Every time someone sees this plate on our roads, it serves as a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today come at a tremendous cost. We must never forget the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of our Purple Heart recipients, and we must continue to honor them not just on special occasions, but every day."
Together, the Purple Heart City designation, commemorative signage, and now the specialty license plate stand as lasting symbols of gratitude for the heroes whose courage and selfless service have helped protect the freedoms enjoyed by every generation.
